Let’s take a look at one of our treatments for varicose veins, Varithena, and the benefits of treatment at our vein center.

What Is Varithena?

Varithena serves as an effective varicose veins treatment, helping reduce the associated symptoms and appearance of these damaged veins. We use an injectable solution with polidocanol, an active ingredient that effectively irritates the vein walls to collapse them.

Through just a few injections, we reroute your blood flow to healthier veins, improving circulation while treating the damaged vein.

If you experience the following due to varicose veins, you could be a candidate for Varithena:

  • Achiness or heaviness in the legs
  • Pain that intensifies after physical exertion
  • Itching or skin changes around the vein
  • Throbbing or cramping in the legs

Benefits of Varithena

Often, many people think that varicose vein treatment requires long downtimes, uncomfortable sutures, and painful incisions. With Varithena near Myakka City, patients experience quick appointments, no painful incisions, and minimal downtime.

Let’s discuss the benefits of Varithena and how it can redefine your vascular health.

Benefit 1: No Surgery or Painful Incisions

Traditional vein surgeries like vein stripping, ligation, or thermal ablation all require lengthy surgeries, long downtimes, and often uncomfortable side effects. Each of these procedures involves incisions, which can increase your risk of blood clots, infections, and scarring. Additionally, patients receive anesthesia, meaning they can’t drive themselves home.

With Varithena, we use ultrasound technology to pinpoint the varicose vein(s) that need treatment. From there, we inject the solution with a few needle pricks into the vein. The solution interacts with the walls of your vein, irritating it and collapsing it.

This entire injection process takes around 30 minutes, requires no anesthesia (although we have topical numbing solutions available for comfort), and has no downtime. Plus, you can drive yourself home afterwards!

Benefit 2: No Downtime or Immobility

Recovery from a vein surgery can take weeks, but with Varithena, you can get back on your feet as soon as you leave our office. We have you wear a pressure dressing for up to 48 hours, but other than that, you may resume your normal activities.

In fact, we recommend casual exercise, especially walking, to enhance your blood flow as your treated vein breaks down over time. We do not recommend strenuous exercise for at least a week as your body heals.

Benefit 3: Treats Varicose Veins and Prevents Complications

With Varithena near Myakka City, you decrease your risk of further complications from varicose veins. As these troublesome veins progress, they can lead to uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous side effects.

Without medical intervention, varicose veins can develop into venous ulcers and blood clots, some of which can be life-threatening.

  • Venous ulcers: These shallow sores form due to pressure in the varicose veins, and are incredibly hard to heal on your own. Without treatment to close off the contributing varicose vein, a venous ulcer worsens over time and puts you at risk of infection.
  • Deep vein thrombosis: Impaired blood flow in varicose veins can cause blood clots. A blood clot in the deep veins of your legs, also called deep vein thrombosis, can break off and travel to your lungs, which can be very dangerous.

Benefit 4: Usually Covered by Insurance

When your varicose vein meets certain severity requirements, it’s categorized as medically necessary to treat.

If your vein’s diameter is larger than 3 millimeters and it has a reflux of 500 milliseconds or more, treatment becomes necessary.

Many insurance policies cover Varithena treatment, because without it, varicose veins can worsen and get larger.

Answering Commonly Asked Questions

Now that you know the benefits of Varithena near Myakka City, let’s answer some commonly asked questions we hear about our process and what you can expect from your treatment.

How can I optimize my results?

Although Varithena has no downtime, Dr. Lackey provides you with a few recommendations to help your healing process go smoothly.

After each of your Varithena treatments, we recommend that you:

  • Wear compression stockings for 4 to 5 days after treatment if you had prominent, bulging veins to enhance the visual results of treatment. Compression stockings help reduce swelling and keep blood flow optimized.
  • Walk a few times a day for at least 20 minutes each time to keep the blood flowing. As you walk, your calf muscles squeeze your veins to help blood flow upwards toward the heart.
  • Avoid prolonged sitting or standing during the day. At the end of the day, use a stack of pillows or blankets to elevate your feet above your heart.
  • Do not use hot tubs, saunas, pools, or baths for 2 to 3 days after your appointment to avoid the risk of infection and allow the injection site to properly heal.

After your last vein treatment, we schedule a follow-up appointment to monitor your healing progress. We ask that you keep this appointment so we can confirm your body is responding properly and address issues should they arise.

What should I expect after treatment?

After treatment, you should expect some discomfort. Your treated vein(s) begin to break down, which might cause a mild reaction.

You could experience:

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Warmth
  • Tenderness
  • Itching

While these normal reactions should subside in a few days, contact our office immediately if you experience extreme discomfort, bleeding, or swelling.

To help with your discomfort during the healing process, you can:

  • Take an anti-inflammatory medication like Aleve, Tylenol, or Motrin as directed on the bottle.
  • Use ice on the injection site for the first 48 hours.
  • After 48 hours, use a warm compress for 20 minutes at a time.
  • Apply an Ace bandage or compression wrap if you have swelling.
  • Use topical remedies like arnica gel or lidocaine to help with injection site pain.
  • Take homeopathic remedies such as vitamin C tablets or grape seed extract as directed by Dr. Lackey.

Is treatment permanent?

For your treated veins, yes, Varithena near Myakka City at our practice has permanent results. Once we inject the solution into varicose veins, they collapse and do not return.

However, new varicose veins can always form, which will need additional treatments. If additional varicose veins appear, schedule an appointment with our experts.
